ESPN's most technologically advanced studio ever built runs on Pixotope
ESPN's Studio W in Bristol, Connecticut was stripped back and rebuilt from the ground up over the summer. From Wednesday 9 September it becomes the permanent home of NFL Live, and the centerpiece studio for college football, NHL and Fantasy Focus Countdown.
The numbers:
🔹 9,200 sq ft of LED
🔹 148M+ pixels in total, 44.7M in the XR volume alone
🔹 4x XR slices powered by Pixotope with ST 2110 output to the facility
🔹 Each Sony HDC-5500 camera locked to its own slice
🔹 First Bristol facility capable of 1080p HDR and UHD, on full ST 2110
“The vision for Studio W required capabilities that didn’t exist in off-the-shelf solutions. We needed a platform that could support multiple camera perspectives, operate at the scale of our LED volume, integrate with our production workflows and meet the reliability demands of live sports,” said Jason Black, Sr. Manager, Product Software Engineering, Disney Entertainment and ESPN Product and Technology. “By working closely with Pixotope and building a custom integration, we created a solution tailored to ESPN’s needs that gives us the flexibility to continue developing proprietary tools and experiences on top of a robust rendering platform.”
